A Quiet Sunday in Paro: Simple Joys and Little Celebrations
Sundays in Paro are always a gentle pause in the week, where life slows down just a little. It’s a day that starts with simple routines but also allows space for togetherness and reflection. As I sit here on my terrace, looking out over the pine trees with a view of the Tiger’s Nest Monastery in the distance, I can’t help but appreciate these quiet moments. The fresh, crisp mountain air, the soft flutter of prayer flags, and the peaceful rhythm of our home create the perfect backdrop for another family Sunday.
This morning began as most Sundays do, with some light chores. I washed the kids’ uniforms, getting them ready for the week ahead. Sundays are always a balance between getting things done and spending quality time with my loved ones. Today, though, there was a slightly different atmosphere in the house. Our younger daughter is deep into her studies, preparing for a big qualifying exam tomorrow. It’s one of those pivotal moments that will help her get ready for her final exams in November. The house feels a little quieter than usual, as we try to give her the space she needs to focus and do her best.
Meals today were simple, as always. Red rice, a staple in Bhutanese homes, and a basic chili curry made with fresh, local ingredients. I’ve been eating vegetarian for a while now, so our meals tend to be straightforward and nourishing. There’s something comforting about having fewer choices sometimes, focusing instead on what sustains us. Red rice, with its earthy, slightly nutty flavor, always makes me feel grounded.
But today wasn’t just about routine—it was also a day for a little celebration. It’s my husband’s birthday! 🎉 In Bhutan, we don’t traditionally celebrate birthdays in the same way many Western cultures do. Growing up, birthdays were simply another day, perhaps marked by a quiet acknowledgment but rarely with big parties or presents. However, over the years, as the world becomes more connected, we’ve embraced a bit of that Western influence. Now, we make a point to wish each other well, and sometimes, like today, we even plan something special. It’s a small change, but one that brings a bit of joy into the day.
Later, I’m planning to go out for a simple dinner in town. Our older daughter is still at school—yes, even on a Sunday! She’s in the 10th grade this year, which means it’s an important time for her. The pressure is on with exams, and extra classes are often held on weekends to help students prepare. Once she gets home, we’ll head out for a quiet family dinner, nothing too extravagant, just a chance to be together outside of the usual routine.
As I reflect on today, I’m reminded of the beauty of simplicity. Our lives here in Paro are not filled with grand events or constant excitement, but rather with the small, meaningful moments that weave our days together. Whether it’s sharing a meal, supporting our children through their studies, or taking a moment to appreciate a birthday, it’s these little things that bring us the most joy.
Sundays like today remind me of how connected we are to the rhythm of life in Bhutan—steady, grounded, and filled with quiet joy. I’m grateful for these moments, for the love that fills our home, and for the opportunity to share them with all of you.
If you’d like to see more glimpses of everyday life in Bhutan, from the small moments to the deep traditions, I’d love for you to follow along on this journey. There’s so much more to share, and I hope my stories bring you a bit closer to this beautiful part of the world.
Until next time, sending you peace and warmth from Paro. 🌿
